Visitor Visa

Visitor Visa

Canada’s Visitor Visa, also referred to as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), allows you to enter Canada for travel purposes, family visitation and business inquiries. Whether you are thinking about Canada immigration or you just want to visit this beautiful country, applying for a visitor visa is a great way to explore Canada, connect with the diverse communities and even make work connections.

Canada’s visitor visa normally allows you to visit Canada for up to 6 months, and it can be granted in one of two ways: the single-entry option or multiple-entry option. The single-entry option allows you to travel to Canada for just one time. This visa is usually granted under these circumstances:

  1. You are eligible for a fee-exemption and your travel purpose to Canada is limited (such as an official visit by a foreign national)
  2. You are participating in a special, one-time event in Canada
  3. There are country-specific procedures in place

The multiple-entry option is the more common option granted to travelers. This visa can be valid for up to 10 years, and allows you to travel to and from Canada multiple times – for 6 months at a time.

Before applying for Canada’s visitor visa, make sure you even need one. While most visitors need a visitor visa to travel to Canada, some of you may just need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). You can find the list of visitor visa exempt countries here.

*You might also need a Canada visitor visa is you’re passing through a Canadian airport on your way to your final destination.

The type of entry permit you will need depends on:

  1. Your nationality
  2. Your method of travel to Canada
  3. The country that issued your travel document
  4. The kind of travel document you are taking with you

Next, you must meet basic requirements in order to apply for your visitor visa:

  1. Have a valid passport or other travel document
  2. Meet health requirements
  3. Have no criminal or immigration-related convictions
  4. Provide proof that you will return to your home country by the end of your visit (show the immigration officer that you have ties to your home country such as a job, family, etc.)
  5. Have sustainable funds to support yourself during your stay in Canada

*In some cases, you might need a letter of invitation from someone who lives in Canada.
*In most cases, you might need to do the biometrics (provide your fingerprint and photo) after you apply.

Some people are not permitted to enter Canada at all. You can be refused entry for the following reasons:

  1. Criminal activity
  2. Human rights violations
  3. Organized crime
  4. Security, health or financial reasons
